FB-FreeSoftwareIn my business of Web Developer, Database Looker Afterer, Valve Wireless Mechanic, Rat and Snake Breeder and General IT bloke I often get asked about affordable tools and software to help in the day to day running of business and organisations, so I have decided to start listing them here.

Post a comment below if you know of any you think should be in the list and I will add it. If you need a tool or software to help you solve a problem then let me know.

Most of these have both Windows and Mac versions as well as Unix varieties and where appropriate, mobile compatibility with Android and IOS.

By the way most if not all of the ones here are FREE, and I have no affiliation with any of them…

General Software for Business and Home

Faster PC

ccCleanerOne of the biggest complaints I get is “my PC is sooo slow” CCleaner in its free form will help keep your PC in order by fixing  registry entries which is one of the biggest problems in Windows Computers for slow and unresponsive service.

For 40 bucks the professional version is worth every cent as you will be able to recover files accidentally deleted and purged from your recycle bin.

Graphics Software

Sumo Paint tutorial videos can be found from: www.youtube.com/user/sumopaint

Sumo Paint is an online image editor, without need to install anything to your device. It’s the most versatile photo editor and painting application that works in a browser. You can open and save images from your hard drive or save it to cloud.

Resize Images

When you take a digital photo, its always best to have your camera or phone on the highest resolution possible, because its much easier to reduce the file size of the image than try to increase it. This little tool is by far the easiest to use to resize images. Just install and drag your images into its window and it will resize and create a copy of your images while keeping the originals in tact. Use it when you need to email photos and images or upload to the internet.

Photoshop or Paintshop Pro Alternative

Do you want a high end image creation and manipulation program but can’t afford paint shop pro or photo shop? Then what about a Free one? I use Gimp exclusively and I seriously doubt there is anything that it cant do. As with the paid for graphics programs there is a learning curve but the resources on their web site make it a relatively shallow one.

Resize PDF’s

Do you have a large PDF that is too big to email? Trying to PDF a PDF to make it smaller almost never works so you have to create it the right size in the first place or you can use this Free service to compress them.

Download music from You Tube

We of course do not support pirating of music in any form, but, if you happen to be on you tube watching or listening to an old clip from years ago that you just cant find in your music store or online then you can just grab the URL and paste it into the site below where it will convert the video file to MP3 for download. It wont copy the annoying advertising before the clip either. This is especially good if you have a slow connection and listening in real time is simply too painful.

Search Inside Files as Well as File Names

Windows search is crap, always has been and I doubt it will get any better. The tool below will not only search for files on your PC by name or part of a name but will also search inside files. Say you have a Word document or Excel file you need to find but cant remember where you stored it or even what name you called it, but, you know it has reference to your tax return from 2011 in it. You can ask Agent Ransack to search inside all files for your tax file number or a specific term or part there of.

PDF Creator and Viewer

I love this piece of software, there are paid versions available but the free one will do so many things. The main thing I use this for is to  OCR documents. OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition. Basically you can turn a PDF into searchable text the full version is less than $50 and allows you to create your own PDF’s as well as inserting and deleting pages and combining PDF’s.

Microsoft Office Replacement

Open Office is the MS Office alternative. While MS Office is the defacto standard for practically all business, open office is no slouch either with over 100 million downloads world wide. Most open office documents are compatible with it’s MS Office counterparts so why not take it for a spin. It’s Free!

Remote Assistance

I use Team Viewer exclusively to log into my customers computers to either fix problems or give tutorials on how to do stuff.

Team Viewer is Free for personal use so if your granny keeps harassing you to fix her PC or find the files she lost this could be an alternative to just telling her to “turn it off and back on”.

We have also set this up for customers so that it runs permanently so they can log into their work machines from home instead of setting up a dedicated VPN.

You can also host online meetings, presentations and training.

If you need help with your PC or some tuition see our remote support page here http://wedoitstuff.com.au/support/remote-help/
